March 25th 2025, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Grossmont College Main Quad. The start for many of the freshmans introductions into what Grossmont College can provide for them. The open campus event began, just like many others, many booths were being set up, different subject majors and school resource representatives standing at their booth waiting to explain why you would fit with them and what they can do for you. All while handing out different prizes, such as candy, miniature journals and flash cards. As you process your surroundings, take note of what is around you, the booths, the people, and how they range from many different walks of life and personalities. In doing this you will find anything you desire to seek at Grossmont, from Nursing booths with lung demonstrations set up, all the way to Journalism Media Studies (JMS). Grossmont has the resources and subjects you have been looking for.
As you walk around you find yourself collecting many different items as you go. Thankfully FYE was kind enough to provide a backpack pouch for these. The items ranged from prizes as I mentioned earlier, to many pamphlets with major information that could interest any type of person. Some of the pamphlets you could find were the East Region Adult Education information, Associated Students of Grossmont College, Refugee and Resource Job Fair, to even Headshot which is for pictures. As you walk around this event you find yourself stacking pamphlets and experiences. One experience I can draw to is the Biology section, this is where you get to use a microscope to look at different organisms. This personally interested me, seeing as I had not used a microscope since highschool.
Many different major subject and resource representatives participated in this event. I could not even count the amount of different booths there were, but it was definitely more than 10. You would walk around and find yourself bouncing from the First Year Experience (FYE) booth all the way to the Biology department, and even the Health and Wellness center (HWC). which I took note of as the HWC was seen giving out fentanyl tests, and as well as free individual therapy cards. This is a clear indication of understanding and caring for the students and the community of Grossmont College.
An event like open house can be important to everyone who cares about their college experience, but specifically for incoming or current Freshmen. This is due to the idea that you can not only get acquainted with your campus resources, professors and subjects, but also with what is available at this college. You can find anything that may interest you, and the way it is carried out is meant to draw you in with each distinct and interesting booth. An event like this can open a newcomer or current student’s eyes to possibilities they could not have imagined. The opportunities that present itself with the resources at hand to converse with each booth member, and receive a greater understanding of what interests you and your needs at Grossmont College.
The nice thing about an event like this, is the serious yet unserious tone of it. As I walked around I saw bubble blowing machines, Deans dressed up as Sherlock Holmes playing “Hide and Seek” and even large speakers blasting music full of vibes and joy. This atmosphere is clear, it is meant to make you feel comfortable in what can be an uncomfortable setting. By that, I mean the discomfort of college and the stress it can bring. In the end, events like these are needed to help the college experience, and on March 25th 2025 at 7 p.m. that is exactly what this did.
