EL CAJON, CALIF. — Alysa Jung proposed a better way to improve English learning at the Student Advisory Board of Education in Sacramento meeting on Nov. 13, 2024.
She reported that English learners don’t receive enough support to pass the English Language Proficiency Assessment for California, an annual exam that only 18,000 students out of 1.1 million pass every year.
Grossmont College has a 100% acceptance rate with a diverse student body coming from around the world and “the largest ESL department of all colleges in San Diego,” said Annette Aagard, an ESL instructor at Grossmont. Many embrace the collegiate journey before full mastery of the English language.
Grossmont College has two pathways to ensure l a n g u a g e and c o l l e g i a t e immersion for non-native English speakers. The first path is American Collegiate English, and the second is a program placement in English as a Second Language.
According to the Grossmont College American Collegiate English website, this program assists international students in their academic, social, and cultural transition to Grossmont College or other U.S. institutions of higher education.
Mostly targeting international students, the program is a language school style that ensures students are in their linguistic apprenticeship and allows them to transfer to Grossmont College and pursue their academic goals.
The website has testimonies from former American Collegiate English students. These students testify that they progressed greatly with the program, which helped them transfer to colleges and then complete their academic journeys.
The English as a Second Language program is a program that students can enroll in or, in most cases, are placed in by counselors to acquire supplementary knowledge of English for academic goals.
According to the English as a Second Language (ESL)Department website, English as a Second Language serves resident and international non-native speakers of English who seek to improve their academic and professional language skills. The curriculum helps students advance in reading, writing, listening, and speaking so that they gain the full range of language skills needed to communicate effectively in their certificate and degree programs, careers, and communities.
ESL levels range from one to six. When applying for college, students may take an online self-guided test and receive a proper placement based on their results.
A chart from a couple of years ago shows the difference between platform and enrollment. In other words, students that a counselor for the ESL program has placed and students self-enrolled in the program, on his top two: 171 white non-Hispanics were placed from 140 enrolled, and 119 Asians were placed against 107 enrolled.
Grossmont College has established a few resources to help multilingual language learners at its scale. The two pathways and supplement sources are available on campus. Tutoring in English writing is quite a helpful tool for English learners to thrive.
It’s awesome to go to see this website and reading the
views of all friends on the topic of this piece
of writing, while I am also keen of getting familiarity.
