EL CAJON, CALIF.—The Health & Wellness Center is providing four different online workshops to students throughout five dates, one having been held already. The workshop topice include: stress and time management, test anxiety, and learning art therapy practices. One time management workshop was held on Feb. 10, and another is on Feb. 24. A stress management workshop will be held on March 3, a test anxiety workshop on March 17, and an art therapy workshop on March 19. For registration, Rachel Yi Ling Benson, organizer of the workshops, said that “there are flyers around campus and students can visit us and we can give them the QR code.”

The Health & Wellness Center is located in building 60-130 on the Grossmont campus. Additionally, a large table displaying various flyers for workshops and events surrounding health and wellness sits in front of the main office of the Health and Wellness Center. Yi Ling Benson hopes for students to not only apply the skills learned in the workshops academically, but in their everyday life as well. “It’s a comfortable place, if they need it, great; if they don’t, it’s still good,” said Benson during an interview.

The Health & Wellness Center of Grossmont College provides services that help students feel and be healthy while maintaining a secure and private connection between students and health faculty. “Anything they come in and share with us is confidential,” Benson said regarding the health services provided.

Mental health is an important topic that has gained more attention recently, and over 60% of college students have reported experiencing stress in 2024. It is valuable for students to recognize the campus resources available, as the Health & Wellness Center’s services extend beyond physical health. Discussion and mentions of the Health and Wellness workshops seems to be limited to the flyers taped up around campus. The Zoom workshops make it convenient for Griffin scholars who are unable to or unwilling to make an appearance for them physically.

Grossmont College grants enrolled students the privilege of mental health services, and the community of Grossmont can benefit greatly from it.

Resource Box: The Health & Wellness Center provides physical care items and packages such as masks, feminine products, as well as tea and honey. Enrolled students can make remote appointments with a mental health counselor via a form online as well. Any additional information on making an appointment or contacting the center itself may be found by referring to the Health & Wellness Center page on Grossmont College’s website, found under the student support section.
